Water falls

At a distance of 7 Kms from Athirapally & 75 Kms from Kochi, Vazhachal Waterfalls is a breathtakingly beautiful waterfall situated very close to Athirapally - Valparai road. It is one of the best places to visit near Athirapally Falls.

Near the entrance of the Sholayar forest range, the waterfall is formed on Chalakkudy River at lower stream of Athirapally Waterfalls. The surroundings of the waterfalls offer rich natual views. Unlike Athirapally Waterfalls, Vazhachal flows through an inclined slope of more than 300 feet to descend into huge pool. It is very difficult and dangerous to step into the flow or to reach the bottom of the flow. It is advised to limit your Vazhachal trip to enjoying the natural beauty of the falls.

There is another seasonal waterfall called Chapra Falls on the way to Vazhachal Falls towards left side of the road. In peak season, the falls can be seen falling from 63 meters height.

Several private vehicles ply between Athirapally & Vazhachal falls.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam is among the most visited destinations in Northern Kerala. Popular as the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia, it constraints the waters of the Karamanathodu, an offspring of the Kabani River. The dam was built with the aim of aiding the Kakkayam Hydro electric power project and help with the irrigation and drinking water requirements of the people during summer. The view from here is magical making it among the best picnic locations in Wayanad.

People love the trekking options available here. The culmination of the trek offers one a spectacular view of the valley below, with the mist covered hills of Wayanad being the primary attraction. Surrounded by beautiful greenery, there are numerous boating options as well. A speedboat ride at the dam is not to be missed if one is in the vicinity, as some prime spots can only be seen from boats. The rock formations in the area are an interesting spectacle as well.

The Royal Fort Kochi

At the heart of ancient Fort Cochin, Kerala, a place that exudes history and culture, is the 'Old Harbour Hotel'. A 300 year-old building that has for long been a heritage monument of this town, now reopened as a boutique hotel. Built in the Dutch style of architecture with hints of Portuguese influences, it was the first hotel of old Cochin. Later it remained a residential home to employees of English tea-broking firms until it was left unused for a period of time.
